Reconciling the River
Partner: Ashna Raman
Site: São Paulo, BR

This redesign for Parque Dom Pedro II reintroduces the interaction
between people and water, while also proposing a series of water treatment pockets throughout the site. We began our research by understanding the history of the Tamanduateí River. Due to the
inaccessibility, pollution and speed of the river, human interaction with the water has become virtually nonexistent. In Sao Paulo, water is an important cultural element, but it is not a part of city life. Our project brings water back to the people in an interactive and natural clean river element.

The project intervenes in the western half of the park, taking advantage of this side’s proximity to the storm water drainage path, Historic Triangle and city markets.

The design collects storm water from the higher topography, treats it and releases it into a new river for human interaction and recreation. This clean river with treated water weaves through the western half of the site, framing different pockets of program.
Along the river there are different
interventions and water features that allow for interaction with the clean river; fountains, a pergola. They all culminate at a
large, clean wading pool in the north with a series of large greenhouses that extend over the main walking path. Through the increased river area and slowed pace, the project will create awareness and reestablish the public
connection to water.

Store | Ship
Site: Sparks, NV

Storeship is a speculative autonomous trucking distribution centered on the idea of a future of perpetual motion. The world of trucking is on the cusp of massive change. Currently the movement of goods via long haul trucking is limited by the human. The driver needs to eat, sleep and stop the truck, and labor laws prohibit them from driving longer than 10 hours per day. This potentially limits their range to 600 miles a day. Without the human, the truck has a range of 840 miles per day. Making all cross country shipping possible within 3
days.
Two technology advances have already been made in semi truck technology. The electric Tesla semi, projected to charge in 15 minutes and the autonomous semi that, despite numerous claims that the technology has years to catch up, it is already being deployed between LA and El Paso.

In this future of post energy scarcity and autonomous trucking the truck stop is no longer needed for drivers to rest. The Storeship is an infrastructural interchange where goods are stored on a new typology of shipping container, delaminate from the truck, are sorted by the autonomous system and jettisoned back while the truck slowly charges at 15mph. The structure is lifted off the ground, freeing the distribution center of the monstrous footprint of its ancestors and allowing it to become a part of a deployable typology for many landscapes and traffic conditions. Inspired by desert art, this projects attempts
to transform a mundane infrastructure into something plastic.

Responsive Grocery
Site: Poughkeepsie, NY

Our food system favors large scale factory farming over smaller regional farms. Currently 4% of farms produce 66% of America’s agriculture. These large farms favor efficiency and maximum output, and have no moral regard for their negative impacts on the environment or economy. Maximum efficiency has led to the rise of monoculture that has increased the fragility of the system.

In the current distribution system small and medium farms are cut off from the communities that surround them. With little means to sell at local scale, they are forced to sell their crops for less to large distributors. If this current system continues to operate without change, there will be a massive restructuring of the global economy. Food insecurity and famine will rapidly accelerate due to global climate change.
This project redefines how we distribute food.

In this new system, localized food security becomes the most valuable asset. The small farmer is connected to the neighboring towns and the rebalanced distribution of crops is more in tune with the rural communities it currently neglects. The project examines the city of Poughkeepsie, where the current layout of grocery stores makes it difficult for the low income residents to access healthy food.

This new system will incorporate past distribution elements on a smaller scale. It will reclaim the current bigbox grocery stores and use the space to ensure the city has an adequate supply of food.

The old downtown large store is reclaimed as a food receiving center, storage and processing facility. It is the mothership grocery focused on seasonal crop availability, with moveable partitions that change with the produce supply. In times of less yield variety, more space in the store is dedicated to community center activities, agriculture education and greenhouse. The old bodegas will be the secondary distribution system to get fresh food dispersed into the neighborhoods.

The bodega reverts back to the old local grocer and combines with a more contemporary convenience store drive-through typology. The new bodega has a thickened façade that responds to the multiple urban conditions that make each bodega unique. The canopy extends over the sidewalk, blurring the edge between public space of the sidewalk and the space of the bodega. The produce shelves allow for the display of goods on the sidewalk, or when some cases permit, the ability for customers to buy groceries from their cars.

Housing as a Frame

Partner: Stephan Van Eeden
Site: South Bronx, NY

At a time when the question of housing has become dominated by socioeconomic or political discourses — fields that themselves are fluid, liquid and susceptible to capitalistic appropriation —this project argues for an architecture of resistance. An architecture that operates

at its most basic level —the ability to provide a frame for living and enjoying —dreaming and remembering.

We imagine housing from the following principles:

Housing not as commodity.
We reject modes of housing that are susceptible to consumption, obsolescence and replacement. Instead housing should embody an attitude of staying. Housing (as the basic unit of the city) is viewed as a public good.
It is investment rather than speculation -a place to

return to not to leave from.
A housing of dignity is proposed.

Stability rather than flexibility.
We argue for stability rather than flexibility —in the selection of type, program, form and material. While flexibility recognizes the failure of modernist architecture to address the capitalist city, its commitment to change, subdivision, modification etc. paradoxically assumes

capitalism’s unevenness and let-it be policies as natural processes and therefore acceptable evolutions of the city. In other words, housing as a public good becomes marketable, easily consumed, repackaged, and commodified. At the unit level, flexible plans can lack catalysts or condensers. The overlapping of uses on a

single space results in the overall reduction of space given to the house. The lack of specificity can result in spaces that while simply adequate for every task, not proficient at any. Lastly, with an infinite reconfiguration of absolute freedom, users are not able to manage the space on their own in an optimal way.

A housing of generosity is proposed.

Slow rather than fast.

We favor processes that are slow and resists those that are fast. Building a community is a multi-generational process. Therefore, the capacity of housing to build community is directly related to its ability to last —to
gain, lose and regain meaning— and by the way it is meant to be occupied. Housing that is cheap and supports shorter an shorter rent horizons disrupts
communities.

A housing of permanence is proposed.

Clear distinction between public and private.

We favor spaces that are private as private (refuge) and public as public (community). The project proposes that community occurs in the public sphere not the private. Modes of co-sharing, co-living that blur the lines of private and public may encourage sharing, but may also
lead to rationing, less generosity, less personal space, and the transformation of the public sphere (goods that should be enjoyed by all) into private building amenities. A clear delineation or limit resists the privatization of
what should be public.

A housing of limits is proposed.

The Brooklyn Public
Site: Brooklyn, NY

Situated in the heart of downtown Brooklyn, the Brooklyn Public is a library focused on the current technological advancements in
information exchange. This intervention attempts to address the needs of the growing community. Rather than a reliquary for slowly expanding collection of knowledge, like the traditional library model, this library pushes the boundaries of the functional aspects of the library typology.

The site is situated in a dense downtown retail zone, next to several local universities.
A vast majority of the residents are transient and do not live in the area, and the neighborhoods surrounding this central hub
all have access to public libraries. In order to maximize participation and provide what a traditional library cannot, this project
is a library in which the users produce the
content.

The library will be a hub for local information exchange in the form of text, art, social medial, and multi-media. The act of exchange is an inherent rejection of the typical square. The intersecting sphere form ebraces a roundness that inspires and promotes a new human social consciousness of shared thought and creativity. The maker spaces are housed in the spheres that pulse grow and push on the interior of the glass facade. Organization is a physical embodiment of an intersection diagram of program relationship and proximities, designed based on overlapping functional needs, and composed as a series of intersections.

The loud main activities take place inside each sphere, while the interstitial spaces provide
quieter areas for reading and reflection.

Blurred Borders

Blurred Borders is a tessellating facade experiment inspired by the structural
intersections of sponges. The project, via the creation of homogeneous concrete tile,
explores the obfuscation of the repeating
edge condition through two iterations. The first iteration is a two dimensional tile
created by casting an original object into rubber. The rubber becomes a one part mold used to cast multiple flat, organic shapes
that connect at intersecting border nodes.

The second iteration is a complex three dimensional tile that adds another variable
to the node connection. In order to achieve a repeatable tile, the original object was cast
as a two part mold.

The multiple fixed node connections on the boarder paired with the organic design on
the interior of the tiles, create an object with seemingly infinite edge conditions.

Lost and Found
Site: Manhattan, NY

Lost and Found is an exploration into the MTA lost item retrieval process. The project is situated at the corner of Avenue A and 14th Street and acts as an extension and access point for the new L train platform. The lost and found
builds on this idea of spatial perceptions, using spatial
illusion to drive the creation of a modular form. The tapered, diamond shaped hallways give the illusion that the hall extends further than its physical boundary.

There are clear, vertical tubes intersecting each diamond that house the lost items collected from the subway. The tubes are closer together at the diamond point to enforce the optical illusion even further.

The similar modules are organized to create a disorienting maze. The MTA employee office is located at the street level, and every night they load
the new items into the top of the tubes. The longer a person waits to retrieve their lost item, the further it falls into the maze. As one gets deeper and deeper, the diamond shapes start to merge together, the tubes
become scattered in an irregular pattern, and the

logics of the spatial system seem to break apart. At the very bottom, the items are spit out onto the floor of a vast room and fall into large piles with all the other unclaimed items. It is here that the search loses
all organization.

The act of retrieving one’s item mimics the experience of the lost object’s path. The viewer feels this as they search through the seemingly endless, complex, organization and circulation. The perception is that the MTA lost and found is a mysterious mess of unsorted
objects. When in reality, the systematic sorting of itemshas a simple, logical hierarchy, able to be understood by the layman.

this way until the 1920s, when the pollution in the

East River Estuary reached its peak. This decimated the oyster population and forced thousands of oyster farms around Manhattan to permanently close. This project is a reintroduction of the oyster back into New
York City; not in a pre-industrial romantic way, but

via the creation of a new ecology. This new ecology will combine the city and the river, the natural and the artificial, the people and the oysters.

East River Park is a perfect site for this intervention as it exists in a weird in-between state. It is not of the city, and it is not of the river. There is a hard line of separation created by the FDR Freeway, and there is a
hard line of separation created between the edge of the

park and the river.
The X Pier will feather these edges and help coalesce two seemingly different ecologies.

The pier consists of several programmatic typologies:the oyster farm, the fish farm, the wetland, and the
market space. Since the East River water is currently polluted by lead and mercury, the pier houses a natural plant filtration system. A reintroduction of the past wetland ecology of 1609. The river water is pumped up and filters down through a series of plant filtration
rings that surround each wetland pool. The depth and the width of each ring was determined by a careful study into the technical requirements of wetland water filtration. These plants will eliminate the mercury and lead from the water. Once the water has been cleaned,
it will be distributed to the oyster and fish pools; creating a self-sustaining environment. These natural programs are raised up above the site in the form of large MegaTubs. Visitors can walk around the natural landscape and inhabit some spaces of the concentric
ring filtration system. The rings are the area where man and nature coexist.

Carbon Capture: Integrated Polymer Facades

This is
the culmination of a semester long research project focused on carbon
sequestering materials. These materials are part of a larger CO2 system known
as carbon capture and storage, specifically post carbon capture. Although there
are many low-tech organic materials that sequester carbon, the project focused on
a breakthrough in polymer research; chains of polymers known as
Polyethyleneimines or PEIs for short. These polymers have unique adsorption
qualities that allow the CO2 molecules in ambient air stick to the surface of
the polymer, and their potential for architectural carbon sequestering systems
has largely been untapped. They are low cost, plentiful, require low energy to
manufacture and require a much lower energy input than any other material to
release the trapped CO2 on their surface. Like most carbon sequestering materials,
they do reach a saturation point, where they can’t adsorb any more CO2 from the
ambient air. Researchers have successfully used pure steam in the de-adsorption
process to release all the carbon.

The project
proposes using these PEIs to create a dynamic façade system that sequesters
carbon on the urban scale, while borrowing language of past experimental
architecture. Because of the nature of the material, its need for constant air
flow to maintain maximum efficiency and need to be cleaned in order to release
the carbon, the new façade typology will be a series of inflatable membranes.
The interior surface will be coated with PEIs that clean the air that is fed
through the fan system. Every façade will be covered with one of these systems
in the future to tap into the plentiful surface area available in New York
City. The proposal is in two parts; one for adapting existing facades and the
other is a possible solution for new construction.

The future
city will not materialize in an instant and must deal with the existing urban
condition. Part One proposes inexpensive components that will allow any
building to purchase and install their own inflatable PEI façade. The semi-permanent
façade is hung from the roof, inflated with a blower fan, and tied down with
anchor components. As you can see from the case study, one building could
potentially remove 24.6 kg of CO2 per week. The nature of this design makes it
easily deployable for any building owner.
In the
second phase, new construction will be designed to maximize contact with the
interior coated membranes of the PEI Polymer. Based off similar inflatable
polymer facades construction, new buildings will be comprised of a double skin
to increase carbon capture via air to solid contact with the PEI membranes
while also combating some of the negative aspects of traditional polymer
facades. Just like the first example, the blower fan introduces CO2 at the top
of the system and the air is cleaned as it reaches the bottom of the façade.

Third, because the carbon needs to be released, compressed and stored,
there needs to be a system for collecting the CO2 steam mixture. The system
depends on an integrated neighborhood network of steam channels to achieve that
goal. Every week the neighborhood would clean the facades and send the steam to
a centralized station that would consolidate the CO2 in pressurized tanks. The
captured Co2 could be used to make a variety of products that already exist.

In this
new system, the façade becomes a dynamic part of the building, both technically
and symbolically.
