Reconciling the River
Partner: Ashna Raman
Site: São Paulo, BR

This redesign for Parque Dom Pedro II reintroduces the interaction between people and water, while also proposing a series of water treatment pockets throughout the site. We began our research by understanding the history of the Tamanduateí River. Due to the inaccessibility, pollution and speed of the river, human interaction with the water has become virtually nonexistent. In Sao Paulo, water is an important cultural element, but it is not a part of city life. Our project brings water back to the people in an interactive and natural clean river element.

The project intervenes in the western half of the park, taking advantage of this side’s proximity to the storm water drainage path, Historic Triangle and city markets.

The design collects storm water from the higher topography, treats it and releases it into a new river for human interaction and recreation. This clean river with treated water weaves through the western half of the site, framing different pockets of program.

Along the river there are different interventions and water features that allow for interaction with the clean river; fountains, a pergola. They all culminate at a large, clean wading pool in the north with a series of large greenhouses that extend over the main walking path. Through the increased river area and slowed pace, the project will create awareness and reestablish the public connection to water.
